about

When I was growing up in Wymeswold, the other little boys would not let me rest contentedly on the grass, but rather they came at me relentlessly, in waves, mocking me and throwing things and generally trying to get a reaction out of me. I couldn't rest contented but the least that I could do was to make sure that under no circumstances would I give them what they wanted. When I came to Glasgow, you followed me there, you were a different kettle of fish altogether, and extremely kind to me, given everything that happened. This was an enormous relief. We used to stand in the drizzle on the street corner drinking Buckfast Tonic Wine and smoking enormous spliffs, each waiting for the other to say almost anything so that we could burst into laughter together. We used to listen to Furry Lewis at 3am singing, ''If you follow me baby, I'll turn your money green, I show you more money than Rockerfeller ever seen.... I declare I'm a honest man... I'm troubled all the time, I been troubled so long... Trouble don't worry my mind.''
