about

On the 17th of September 1892, Jim Corbett, a former Californian bank clerk, became the first heavyweight champion of the world under the new rules laid down by the Marquess of Queensberry. Even more important than the rules was the fact that Jim Corbett was wearing boxing gloves.

The man from whom Corbett won the title was a fellow Irishman from Boston, the fabulous John L. Sullivan, who was a legend in his own lifetime. Indeed John had become champion by beating a fellow Irishman Paddy Ryan on February 7th 1882 in Mississippi City, but from the moment he became champion the heady wine of success proved too much for him and he degenerated into a bar-room bully, a drunk, but someone that the Irish-American public loved til the day he dies.

Corbett, known as Gentleman Jim or Pompadour Jim, was the very antithesis of Sullivan.

Corbett was hated for having destroyed a living legend.
